Ear Taping

Corgi puppies are born with floppy ears that naturally fold down. As they mature, their ears will begin to raise and straighten on their own, but occasionally they will need some assistance. Ear taping is a useful tool, and provides the necessary help for those ears that just need a little boost to stand upright.  It can take anywhere from 8-24 weeks for Corgis to have fully developed upright ears.

The AKC states that upright ears is the breed standard for Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

Use 2 inch wide masking tape to tape your corgi’s ears. Masking tape will avoid adhesive getting potentially stuck to your puppy’s fur. Begin by taping around the base of the ear, and slowly tape upwards, making sure not to get any folds or wrinkles, until the ear is standing completely upright.

Tape both ears in this manner, and then reinforce the ears by placing a band of tape between the ears. Simply use two longer pieces of tape to connect the two ears together, one across the front of the ears, and one across the back.

The tape can be left on for a week. If the puppy manages to pull off the tape during play time, simply replace it as soon as possible. After seven days, remove the tape and allow the ears to rest. If they begin drooping again, simply replace the process until they are standing on their own.
